Hey, student! Are you ready for the next step in your design career, but are not quite sure how best to go about it yet?

No worries! These four tips will help you blow all the agencies away instantly with your application!

1. Write a short and catchy motivation

Rule 1 of writing for the web: most people don't read, they scan texts. And although your cover letter is probably not meant to be a web text, you can assume that a design agency will be happy with a short, catchy text . Very nice, that motivation that takes up a whole A4, but the chances of us reading it intently...

We would much rather see a nice, concise text explaining who you are, what you are looking for and why. Don't worry, you really don't need to be a copywriter. However, it is the first impression we get of you, so a great opportunity to show who you are.

2. Send your (online) portfolio directly

Besides your introduction and motivation, it is also very important to see what you can do. Therefore, send your portfolio along immediately. Your portfolio will give us an idea of your skills as a designer. We also get an idea of your style and whether it matches our style.

Are you not quite sure how to make a good design portfolio? Then be sure to read our article 'How to make a good design portfolio?'.

3. Prepare your interview well

You've applied, sent in your portfolio and you've been allowed an interview to meet? Congratulations, you've cleared the first hurdle! Our first tips for the interview: arrive on time and be yourself.

We can imagine you're a bit nervous. This is not a bad thing! However, you can help yourself by preparing well. To get you started... Chances are we will ask you to explain some work from your portfolio during your interview. "What all did you do?" "What were your design choices?" "Which work are you most proud of?" "What did you encounter during the process?" These are the kinds of questions you can expect.

Also think in advance about what questions you have for the company. Why? Well... The company should fit you as well as you fit the company.

4. Check that the company is as good a fit for you as you are for the company

It is important that you fit in with the company you are applying to. But perhaps even more important is that the company also suits you. Only then will you get back as much energy as you give.

What are you looking for in an internship? You might be spending 40 hours a week at that place, so it is nice that you feel at home there. Beforehand, draw up a list of questions you would like answers to.

Think about practical things like salary, working conditions and working hours, but also more abstract things like the company culture and philosophy. Certainly don't feel embarrassed. There should be a click.
