Expert review

Do you enjoy visiting a website or app that is difficult to use? If your answer is "no", you belong to the largest group of people. Imagine if someone found your website or app difficult to use. Would that be bad? Would that have a negative impact on you or the company you work for? For example, does it impact on business objectives, such as:

  • Missing out on orders?

  • Missing out on applications?

  • Missing out on sign-ups?

  • Missing out on bookings?

  • Losing out on donations?

  • Unnecessary burden on customer service?

An expert review gives you insight into the usability of your website or app. It provides insight into bottlenecks and opportunities to improve usability. Of course, we also mention positive points.

What is an expert review?

An expert review is an analysis by one of our experts of your website or app. It thus helps to form a picture of the usability of your product or service. It gives you insight into bottlenecks and identifies additional opportunities for improvement.

An expert review is also called a design review or usability review and can be applied to (mobile) websites, applications, intranets, back office systems, etc.

While conducting an expert review, a usability expert analyses and assesses the usability of the digital product. The analysis and assessment is done based on standard fundamental principles about usability (the heuristics), knowledge from surveys, own experience and user research.

Concrete recommendations for improving usability follow from the analysis.

Why is an expert review important to do?

If all goes well, your website, application, intranet or back-office system has a purpose. It could be:

  • Selling products.

  • Requesting a quote.

  • Taking out a subscription.

  • Making a booking.

  • Pulling people into the physical shop.

  • etc.

When a visitor proceeds to an action as mentioned above, your visitor has converted and you have 'conversion'.

If your website or app is awkward to use, chances are that visitors won't take any of those actions and thus won't convert.

Simply because they can't do this (ability) or because they don't have the patience for it (motivation). Despite wanting to, they get frustrated and leave your website or app and/or look for an alternative.

Creating an interface is much like building a house: If you don’t get the foundations right, no amount of decorating can fix the resulting structure.

A website or app that is difficult to use degrades the user experience and can cause users to leave a website or app. This is why the usability (usability) of your website or app is so important. This is the foundation of every website and app.

Many obvious bottlenecks in this foundation can already be identified through an expert review. An expert review is financially a somewhat lower investment than, for example, user research such eyetracking.

In fact, our experience shows that much more valuable insights come out of an eye-track survey if an expert review has been done first. User survey participants otherwise mainly name obvious bottlenecks.

When is an expert review useful?

An expert review is recommended in the following situations:

  • You want to get an idea of the usability of your website or app.

  • You want to know if there are any basic bottlenecks and where there is room for improvement.

  • You want to show stakeholders the state of the website or app.

  • Time and/or budget do not (yet) allow for a user survey.

Thereby, expert review can be carried out at any stage; from design to development:

  • On the (current) live version.

  • On a prototype and/or design.

  • During development (on an alpha, beta or demo version, for example).

Our approach

Our approach consists of four steps:

1. Inventory and alignment

We will ask you about the occasion, the goal, your expectations, any wishes and whether there are any specific concerns. This can be on location, but of course also via video call or a phone call.

2. Develop and present proposal

We work out a proposal and present it to you. If you agree to our proposal, we will get to work.

3. Conduct the expert review

One of our usability experts performs the expert review, focusing on the target group's usage. We do this on the basis of usability heuristics*, knowledge from surveys and our own experience. We elaborate all (potential) usability improvements in a clear document and support them with images.

We also give suggestions for improvement. This way, you get a report with practical and concrete points for improvement with which you can make targeted improvements and/or show stakeholders how user-friendly your website, application, intranet or back-office system is.

* This is a checklist of fundamental guidelines that a digital product should meet as a minimum and are based on internationally established standards such as ISO 9241 (Ergonomics of human-system interaction) and accessibility guidelines such as the WCAG.

4. Delivery and discussion

As soon as the expert review is completed, we will share it with you. We will make an appointment to go through the review together. We will clarify any questions or uncertainties for you

You can now focus on improving your website, application, intranet or back-office system yourself, or with our help.
